Editorial policy
The standards we hold ourselves to, and how to hold us to them.
No fabrication, ever
This is the rule everything else follows from. We do not invent specifications, prices, certifications, ratings or review counts. We do not write fake testimonials or fabricate hands-on testing. If we cannot verify a claim from a manufacturer spec sheet, a standards document or a reputable published source, we leave it out and, where it matters, tell you we couldn't confirm it. See our full methodology for how we source everything.
Sourcing standards
- Certification claims trace to the primary standard — DOT (FMVSS 218), UNECE Regulation 22, Snell, or the relevant EN standard for apparel and armor.
- Product specifications trace to the manufacturer's published spec page or manual.
- Where a measured figure came from someone else's lab or test, we name and link them rather than presenting it as our own.
- Prices come only from the live price layer and are date-stamped.
- Every page that makes factual claims ends with a Sources list.
Editorial independence
Lid & Leather is funded by affiliate commissions (see the affiliate disclosure), and that funding never buys a ranking. No brand pays us for placement or a positive review. No manufacturer sends us products in exchange for coverage. Commission rates do not influence the order of our picks — which is why you will regularly find a cheaper product ranked above a more expensive one that would pay us more. When the budget option is the better buy, we say so.
Safety content
Because we cover safety-critical gear, we hold certification and standards content to the highest bar: we link the actual standards documents, we never imply we crash-tested or lab-tested anything, and we present certification and fit guidance for general information — always verify the certification label and fit of any helmet before you ride.
Corrections
We get things wrong sometimes, and we fix them. If you spot a factual error, email info@lidandleather.com or use the contact form. We aim to correct genuine errors within 48 hours and to note significant corrections on the affected page. Every article shows a published date and a last-updated date so you can see how current it is.
Updates and freshness
Prices refresh automatically from the live layer. We revisit certification and spec content when a standard is revised (for example a new Snell or ECE revision) or when a product is discontinued or recalled, and we refresh our roundups periodically to keep picks current and available.
