Intercom + music
Helmet Comms
Intercom, music and turn-by-turn without taking a hand off the bar. Mesh vs Bluetooth, and who wins.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings, and we say so when the cheaper gear is the better buy. How this works.
A helmet communicator does three things — rider-to-rider intercom, phone calls and music, and spoken GPS directions — none of which should ever involve looking at a screen at speed. Once you have ridden with one on a group trip, going back to hand signals feels quaint.
Two companies own this space: Cardo and Sena. The technical fork that matters is mesh vs Bluetooth. Bluetooth intercoms chain riders in a fixed daisy chain — drop one and the chain can break. Mesh networks (Cardo's DMC, Sena's Mesh 2.0) let riders join and leave freely, self-heal when someone rides out of range, and generally hold a bigger group together. If you ride in groups, mesh is worth the premium; if it is just you and a passenger, a good Bluetooth unit is plenty.
Beyond the network, judge units on sound(Cardo's JBL-tuned speakers are the benchmark), real-world range (the advertised mile-plus numbers assume line of sight — expect less in the hills), battery life, and waterproofing. Price climbs with mesh, premium speakers and multi-rider range; a solo commuter does not need the flagship.
The mistake is buying a flagship mesh unit to ride alone, or a bargain intercom and being unable to pair it with your friends' Cardos. Start from how you actually ride, then read Cardo vs Sena and our install guide.
