How to Stop Your Helmet Visor Fogging

Fog is condensation, and condensation has exactly two causes you can act on. Deal with those in the right order and most riders never need to buy anything — here is that order, cheapest first.

Your visor fogs because warm, humid air from your breath touches a cold surface and the water in it condenses out. That is the whole mechanism. Every fix that works does one of two things: it stops the surface being cold, or it stops your breath reaching it. Anything that does neither is a temporary patch, and knowing which is which saves you money and a winter of frustration.

It matters more than it sounds. A visor that whites out at a junction removes your vision at the moment traffic is closest to you, and the instinctive response — cracking the visor and squinting into cold rain — trades one visibility problem for another. This guide is ordered by cost, starting at zero, because most riders can fix this without buying anything.

Step 1: put your breath guard back in (free)

Most full-face helmets ship with a breath guard — a small fabric or foam baffle that clips into the chin bar in front of your nose. It exists solely to send exhaled air down and out of the chin vent rather than up onto the shield. It also feels slightly odd for the first week, which is why a large number of riders remove it, forget about it, and then fight fog every winter.

Step 2: use the vents you already paid for (free)

Modern helmets have a chin vent aimed at the back of the shield and top vents that exhaust air out of the rear. Riders close them in winter because cold air is unpleasant, and then wonder why the visor fogs. The chin vent in particular is not a comfort feature — it is the defroster, and it is aimed at the inside of your visor deliberately.

The correct winter setting is chin vent open, top vents closed or partly closed. You lose a little warmth on your face and you keep your vision. If the cold on your chin is the problem, fit a chin curtain, which seals the bottom of the helmet and reduces the draught without closing the vent that clears your shield.

Step 3: crack the visor to the first detent, not open (free)

Almost every visor has a city position — a first detent that holds the shield a few millimeters open. That gap moves enough air across the inside of the shield to prevent fog without exposing your eyes to rain or grit at speed. It is designed for exactly this situation.

Use it as you slow down rather than after the fog appears. Fog forms fastest when you stop, because the airflow that was clearing it stops too — so the habit that works is opening the detent as you approach a light, not once you cannot see through it.

Step 4: stop tucking your neck warmer into the helmet (free)

This is the most common self-inflicted fogging cause and almost nobody connects the two. A balaclava, buff or jacket collar pulled up over your chin does two things: it channels your exhaled breath straight up inside the helmet instead of letting it escape at the bottom, and it blocks the chin vent that would have cleared it.

Wear the neck warmer under the helmet edge, covering your neck, and keep it below your mouth. If your face is genuinely cold, that is what a breath guard plus a chin curtain is for. Our layering guide covers how to arrange the neck seal so it seals wind out without redirecting your breath upward.

Step 5: clean the visor properly (nearly free)

A contaminated shield fogs faster, because dirt, salt and old coating residue give water something to nucleate on. Clean it with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a clean microfibre cloth. Never use household glass cleaner: ammonia and solvents attack polycarbonate and strip anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings. Never wipe a dry visor — grit on a dry cloth is how visors get scratched. Step 6: buy a Pinlock insert (the real fix)

If steps one to five are not enough — and in genuinely cold, wet, stop-start commuting they often are not — this is where you spend money, and this is the thing to spend it on. A Pinlock insert is a second lens sealed against the inside of your shield. The trapped air between the two acts as an insulator, so the inner surface never gets cold enough to condense on. Pinlock also publishes a moisture-absorbing surface on the lens for whatever still gets through.

Check for pins on the inside of your visor first. If they are there, buy the lens for your exact visor model — these are not universal. If your shield is smooth, an adhesive film insert builds the same air gap less elegantly. Both are ranked in our anti-fog insert roundup.

What about sprays and balms?

They work, and they do not last. A coating changes how water behaves on the surface so that it spreads into a transparent film instead of scattering droplets — real, and useful — but it wears with every wipe, clean and ride. Keep one in your jacket pocket for the ride that turned colder than forecast, and for your glasses, which no visor insert can help. Do not build your winter around one.

The thing nobody tells you about a wet visor

If your visor fogs the moment you put a cold, wet helmet on your head, the helmet itself is the problem — the liner is holding moisture from yesterday's ride. Dry the helmet properly between rides, liner side up, somewhere with moving air and no direct heat. A helmet stored damp in a cold garage is a fogging machine before you have exhaled once, and it is also how liners start to smell.

Do not use a hairdryer, a radiator or a heater on a helmet. Heat degrades EPS foam, and EPS is the part that actually manages an impact. Air-dry it. Our helmet lifespan guide covers what else quietly degrades a shell over time.

Why does my helmet visor fog up so quickly at traffic lights?
Because the airflow that was clearing it stops when you do. Moving air across the inside of the shield keeps condensation from forming; at a standstill there is none, and your breath wins in seconds. The fix is to crack the visor to its first detent as you slow down rather than after it fogs, and to make sure your chin vent is open.
Should I open my helmet vents in winter?
The chin vent, yes — always. It is aimed at the inside of your visor and it is the defroster. Closing it in cold weather is the most common reason a helmet fogs. If the draught on your face is the problem, fit a chin curtain to seal the bottom of the helmet rather than closing the vent.
Does a neck warmer make a helmet fog up?
If you tuck it up over your mouth and chin inside the helmet, yes — badly. It channels your breath upward inside the shell and blocks the chin vent. Wear it under the helmet edge, below your mouth. This is one of the most common self-inflicted fogging causes.
Is a Pinlock worth it?
If you ride through a cold, wet winter, it is the best money you can spend on a helmet after the helmet itself. It is the only anti-fog method that works by insulation rather than by a coating that wears off. Check your visor has Pinlock pins first, and buy the lens made for your exact visor.
Can I use anti-fog spray meant for glasses on a helmet visor?
Generally yes for anti-fog balms and wipes designed for lenses, which is why Cat Crap and similar products are popular with riders. Avoid anything containing ammonia or strong solvents — visors are polycarbonate and those attack both the plastic and its anti-scratch coating. Test on a corner first.
My helmet fogs before I even set off. Why?
The liner is damp, usually from a previous wet ride, so the humidity inside the helmet is already high before you breathe. Dry the helmet between rides in moving air, liner side up, with no direct heat — never a hairdryer or radiator, because heat degrades the EPS foam that manages impacts.
